School for Lay Ministry advanced classes

September 05, 2018

The School for Lay Ministry Commission Advanced Classes begins October 13 at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Each of the classes are available to all clergy, laity or those interested. Don’t wait to take advantage of these special learning opportunities.

  1. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 “Missionary Conferences” with Rev. Jon Disburg, from Ottumwa First
  2. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 “Oh no, I forgot to order the Special Sunday envelopes!” with Rev. Denny Coon, from Union Park-Des Moines
Have you ever looked at the official United Methodist calendar on the Friday before M.L. King Birthday observance and realized that Sunday is Human Relations Day Offering and you forgot to order the envelopes?

It might help to know you aren’t the first and probably won’t be the last. So maybe we need to pay better attention to all of the Special Offerings and in addition to putting the envelopes in the bulletin or hoping the good folks bring a little extra cash, we should spend some quality time and energy promoting these Sunday offerings.

The class will review the six offerings and their focus. It will look at the possibilities of preaching, developing children’s sermons, incorporating them into worship, generating interest in the offerings, and developing lessons to go along with them.

Have you ever wondered how much is collected? Where does the money go? Did you know they are mentioned in the Book of Discipline? (Oh no, more guilt for not ordering the envelopes!)

This will be a day for collective wisdom so bring your outside-the-box thinking skills and you will have fun working your way through the special Sundays. The class will be beneficial to you, your church and the recipients of the offerings.
  3. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019 “Confirmation/Small Group Leadership” with Mike Sells, SLM 2018 Graduate
In this class, you will explore the different elements of preparing and executing a confirmation class including focusing on parent meetings, creating class schedules and topics of learning, preparing lesson plans, as well as how to communicate with the class. Also learn what leadership qualities have been found most useful as a confirmation facilitator.

You will also examine small groups and difference between Bible Studies and Life Groups. You will look at qualities of a successful life groups, leadership functions in a life group, resources for study, and preparation and delivering instruction.
